Even with AZ Reid and June Mar Fajardo expected to spearhead the Beermen’s campaign in the 2016 PBA Governors’ Cup, coach Leo Austria has expressed concerns on his team’s readiness to defend the crown.
“I’m worried because we’re missing a lot of players and I don’t know if we’re ready,” he said.
Ready or not, San Miguel has to show up when it goes up against Phoenix Sunday at Smart Araneta Coliseum at 4 p.m.
Arwind Santos has been placed in the Beermen’s injury list, Chris Lutz is still expected to stay in the sidelines, and big men Gabby Espinas and Yancy de Ocampo are still nursing their own injuries.
But AZ Reid shared that the Beermen isn’t using those as an excuse.
“We’re missing the core, but we won’t make any excuses,” the former Best Import said. “We’re professional so you got to be ready anytime. Other guys are getting the opportunities and this is their chance to show what they can do. We’ll see what happens.”
Austria is also keeping his hopes up against the new look Fuel Masters.
“If we play as team on both ends at andun pa yung gutom ng team, capable itong team na manalo,” he said.
Meanwhile, Phoenix coach Ariel Vanguardia will be shooting for his first win at the helm after his team failed to score the comeback win and fell to Meralco, 108-103 on Friday.
