‘SIYA NA YUNG BEST POINT GUARD SA PBA’ | TNT’s Jayson Castro sees GlobalPort’s Terrence Romeo rising to top

TNT guard Jayson Castro, who has been called the ‘Best Point Guard in Asia’, has a new label for his old Gilas Pilipinas teammate, GlobalPort hotshot Terrence Romeo.

After a high-octane duel between the two elite point guards on Wednesday, Castro was nothing but praise for his counterpart, whom he dubbed the ‘Best Point Guard in the PBA’.

“Sobrang laki ng inimprove niya, especially yung court vision niya. Before, puro all the way lang. Nakikita na niya yung mga teammates niya ngayon, lalo na yung mga rumo-roll na big men. Ngayon mahirap na siyang gwardyahan. Yung maturity niya nakukuha na niya,” Castro told sportswriters after TNT’s 122-120 victory.

“Siya na yung best point guard sa PBA,” he added.

According to Fidel Mangonon III, the PBA’s head of stats, Romeo still leads the scoring this conference with 24.3 points per game with Castro not far behind at 22.5 ppg.

But ‘The Blur’ won the duel on both the individual and team fronts on this night. Aside from TNT getting the victory, he scored 37 big points, compared to Romeo’s 33, and was involved in the game-winning play, issuing the pass to a wide-open Ranidel De Ocampo for the clincher.

The challenge of going up against an excellent backcourt that includes not only Romeo but former No. 1 pick Stanley Pringle seemed to light a fire under Castro.

“Nakaka-challenge din kasi alam natin na scorer siya. Siguro natapat lang din na first half ko, yung outside shots ko, maganda. Kasi, yung game plan nila ibinibigay nila yung outside,” Castro said.

“Yung backcourt nila, Terrence and Pringle, sobrang ganda. Sobrang hirap nila i-stop. Nakaka-challenge, pero hindi naman ako nakikipag-compete individually. Gusto ko lagi, team talaga.”

For Castro, though, the big scoring performance was not a result of a mano a mano with Romeo but simply a matter of doing what his team needs from him.

“Yung import kasi namin hindi scorer. Kailangan naming mag-provide ng support. Lalo na sinabihan kami ng mga coaches namin na kailangan naming umiskor kasi yung import namin more on defense talaga,” he added. - Interaksyon
